Rio de Janeiro is a city in southeastern Brazil, in Guanabara Bay, known for its tourist attractions, the most famous of which is the Carnival that ends on Ash Wednesday, as well as the fascinating world of the favelas, turned famous by Fernando Meirelles in “The City of God”. The city was discovered on January 1, 1502 by the Portuguese Gaspar de Lemos, an explorer no less important than Vasco da Gama or Pedro Álvares Cabral, but far less popular throughout history. Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil and was also the capital of the Portuguese Empire for almost 7 years, between 1815 and 1822.
