Mozambique is located on the East Coast of Africa and is bounded by the Indian Ocean. The capital is Maputo, a name which the city acquired after its independence, in 1975. Its previous name was Lourenço Marques. There are a number of assumptions about how Mozambique was named, but the most popular one refers to the presence of an Arab ruler, Mussa Bin Bique, whose name was a real phonetic challenge. The Portuguese explorers used to mispronounce his name, which came to be known as Mozambique.
Although the only official language in Mozambique is Portuguese, over 40 dialects of the Bantu group coexist in this country.
